We all know laundry is a regular part of life, but did you know it can have a pretty hefty impact on the planet? From the water and energy used by your washing machine to the chemicals in your detergent, the laundry process can harm the environment. Don’t worry, though—there are plenty of ways to make your laundry routine more eco-friendly. Whether you're looking to make your own detergent or upgrade your washing machine, this guide has got you covered!

1. Upgrade to an Eco-Friendly Washing Machine

If your washing machine is a bit on the older side, it might be time for an upgrade. Newer machines are designed to use less water and energy, making them much more eco-friendly. While the initial cost might feel like a big investment, it will pay off in the long run with lower utility bills. Plus, you’ll be doing the planet a solid!

2. Use Your Washing Machine’s Eco Settings

If upgrading isn’t on the cards just yet, don’t worry! Most modern washing machines come with an eco setting. This setting uses lower temperatures, cutting down on the energy required for heating, and reduces water usage—all while still washing your clothes effectively. Not sure if your machine has this feature? Check your manual to find out.

If your machine doesn’t have an eco option, you can still make a difference by tweaking your laundry routine:

  • Opt for Cold Water: A whopping 90% of the energy your washer uses goes into heating water. So, try using cold water to save energy and your clothes will still come out fresh and clean. There are plenty of cold-water detergents out there to ensure your laundry gets a proper wash.

  • Shorten the Cycle: Shorter cycles save both time and energy, and they’re gentler on your clothes. Plus, they reduce the chance of microfibres breaking off, which helps your clothes last longer.

3. Run Full Loads (But Don’t Overload!)

One of the easiest ways to make your laundry more eco-friendly is to run full loads. A full load maximises your washing machine’s efficiency, reducing the number of cycles you need to do. Aim to fill your machine to around three-quarters full—this is the sweet spot.

Be mindful, though—overloading your washing machine can cause damage, so avoid stuffing it to the brim. A well-balanced load will ensure the machine works at its best, without straining the motor or causing leaks.

4. Choose Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergents

When it comes to detergents, eco-friendly options are essential. Many commercial detergents contain harmful chemicals that can pollute the environment, so it’s important to choose products with both the ingredients and the packaging in mind.

Here are some things to look out for:

  • Powder Detergents: These are often packaged in cardboard, which is great for the planet. However, some powder detergents contain microplastics and may not perform well in cold water.

  • Liquid Detergents: While liquid detergents often come in plastic bottles, there are eco-friendly, refillable options available. Look for detergents with fewer chemicals for a more sustainable wash.

  • Laundry Pods: These are convenient, but the plastic they’re made from can be harmful to aquatic life. Some brands have switched to biodegradable materials, so check the packaging before purchasing.

Eco Laundry Balls: A Green Alternative

For an even greener laundry routine, try eco-washing balls. These nifty little gadgets are made from recyclable plastic and contain ceramic stones with natural minerals. They work in all types of washing machines and are a great option for sensitive skin or allergies. Plus, they can last for hundreds of washes, making them a super sustainable choice!

5. Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

If you’re feeling crafty, why not make your own eco-friendly laundry detergent? It’s super easy and you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 bar of soap

  • 1 cup of borax (sodium borate)

  • 1 cup of washing soda

Simply grate your bar of soap into small flakes (a cheese grater works great!), and mix it with the borax and washing soda. That’s it! You can use about one or two tablespoons of the mixture per load.

For a liquid version, dissolve the mixture in a pot with water, stir well, and let it cool before transferring it into a container. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for a lovely natural fragrance.

6. Use Vinegar as a Fabric Softener

White vinegar is a true eco-warrior in your laundry routine. It acts as a natural fabric softener, softening your clothes without the chemicals. Simply add one cup of white vinegar to your load, and it’ll neutralise the pH, remove detergent residue, and leave your clothes soft and fresh.

7. Dry Your Clothes the Eco-Friendly Way

Skip the dryer and go for air drying whenever you can. Clothes dryers use a lot of energy—almost as much as a fridge! On warmer days, line-drying your clothes outside is the most eco-friendly option. If it's too cold or rainy for that, try hanging them indoors in a well-ventilated area.

8. Professional Laundry Services with an Eco Twist

If you’d rather spend your time doing other things (like hanging out with family or binge-watching your favourite show), consider using a professional laundry service that prioritises eco-friendly methods. Many companies now use green cleaning products that are safe for both you and the environment. Plus, your clothes will be fresh, clean, and delivered to your door—what’s not to love?
